Suede and Smooth Leather Care: Start With the Surface

KAKAVY Material Notes

A mixed-material bag needs more than one approach. Identify each surface before cleaning it, keep routine care gentle, and do not assume a cream intended for smooth leather belongs on suede.

One bag, two surfaces

The Roam shoulder bag pairs an olive suede body with vegetable-tanned leather trim and strap. The soft-looking body and the smoother orange details are separate care zones. A product described simply as suitable for leather is not enough information to treat both.

Find the boundary first: olive suede body, orange leather details. This product photograph shows the materials, not a cleaning test.

Full-grain describes a leather characteristic; vegetable-tanned describes its tanning. Neither term tells you that a particular cleaner is safe on a finished product. Start with the actual surface, including any trim and lining.

Begin with dry surface dust

For loose dust on dry suede, start with a light touch and a clean, soft brush intended for suede. Check a discreet area before continuing and stop if colour or fibres come away. Do not scrub the neighbouring trim with the same method simply because it is part of the same bag.

Saphir separates initial dust removal from wet cleaning in its suede footwear guide. Its cleaner recipes and spray recommendations concern footwear and have not been validated on Roam's dye, trim or construction. They are not a treatment prescription for this bag.

After an accidental splash

Remove surface moisture gently with a clean absorbent cloth rather than rubbing it in. Let the item dry naturally, away from a radiator or other direct heat. Do not try to speed up drying or immediately cover a wet mark with oil.

Natural drying after removing excess water is also recommended in Mulberry's bag-care guidance. This is a precaution, not a promise that a water mark will disappear. For a soaked bag, persistent stain or colour transfer, contact us before attempting a treatment.

Smooth does not mean every conditioner is suitable

Our handcrafted cash wrap wallet uses full-grain vegetable-tanned leather with a smooth, reflective finish and a microfiber lining. Those facts identify this product; they do not establish which cleaning chemical is compatible with its finish.

The cash wrap has a different surface from Roam's suede body. Its shine is not proof of a particular coating or cleaner compatibility.

For routine dust on a smooth surface, begin with a clean, dry, soft cloth. Before using a cleaner or conditioner, identify the exact product and obtain advice for that finish. A hidden-area check is a precaution, not a guarantee against later colour or texture changes. We do not specify a universal monthly conditioning schedule.

Storage matters too

Store a dry item away from prolonged direct sunlight, heat and damp conditions. Avoid forcing a bag into a sharp fold or storing it under heavy objects. The Canadian Conservation Institute's leather notes explain environmental and treatment risks in a museum context; their collection targets are not household settings we require customers to maintain.

What should you send us before trying a treatment?

Use our contact page with your product name or order number, a clear photograph of the affected area, what happened, and the name of anything already applied. For any proposed cleaner, include its label. We have not established a tested cleaner list for these products, so a specific combination may need further checking rather than an immediate recommendation.

Choosing a bag first? Our shoulder bag guide explains the differences in shape and storage. Care advice here does not change product warranties or return rights.
